PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
EVERTON FC
Coach: David Moyes (Sco)
After Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger, David Moyes is the Premiership’s 3rd longest serving manager, being in charge at Everton for over 6 years going into this season.
Moyes started his management career at Preston in 1998, where he took them from the lower reaches of League 1 to the Championship play-offs.
He took charge of Everton in 2002, saving them from relegation, and in most seasons since, he has been challenging for the European places, with his best season being the 2004/5 season, where Everton finished 4th, qualifying for the Champions’ League. In the last 2 years, Moyes has established Everton as a top side, with consecutive top 6 finishes

Good:
Much has been said of Everton’s good work ethic and team spirit, but Everton are based around a very strong spine to the team; Tim Howard, Joseph Yobo, Tim Cahill, Mikel Arteta and Yakubu are highly reliable players.
Yakubu, who signed from Boro last season, had a good season up front for Everton last season, notching up 15 league goals in 29 appearances and with upcoming stars, James Vaughan and Anichebe, Everton have some quality in attack.
Bad:
Everton’s lack of depth in the squad may affect them this season and there is little cover for the sides’ key players; last season when Tim Cahill was injured, Everton missed the midfielder’s goals and playmaking ability – similarly, if Arteta were to get injured or suspended, there is not a lot more creativity left in Everton’s midfield.
Moyes has, as yet, still failed to make any signings, while offloading Andrew Johnson (who, while not prolific in terms of goalscoring, was a very useful and unselfish partner to Yakubu) and Lee Carsley.

Star Player:
Mikel Arteta was integral to Everton’s good league performance last season; in Everton’s set-up Arteta is given the playmaking role, as well as taking all of their set-pieces and it was a job he relished last season (14 of Eveton’s 55 league goals last season came from an Arteta set-piece).

Summary:
Moyes has built an Everton side of some quality, but this season, their small squad size may become a big problem. While Everton have shown some consistency in the last couple of years in terms of league positions, if Moyes does not bring in two or three players, they may be caught short come the winter period.
