PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
MANCHESTER UNITED
Coach: Alex Ferguson (Sco)
Ferguson is certainly one of the best managers of all time, his domestic and European record being nothing short of astonishing; with Aberdeen, he won the league 3 times, the Scottish FA cup 4 times and the Cup Winners’ Cup once and with Man Utd he has won the Champions League 2 times, the Cup Winners’ Cup once, the FA Cup 5 times and the Premier League 10 times in his 21 seasons in charge.

Good:
Defensively, Man Utd are exceptional (conceding a club-record-low 22 goals last season) and offensively they aren’t bad either. With Ronaldo, the world’s best player, likely to be staying and with young players Tevez, Nani and Rooney more experienced, Man Utd look very strong in most areas.
Bad:
Another 42-goal season from Ronaldo may be asking too much, and whether Rooney or Tevez are up to taking on the goalscoring mantle is uncertain. Ronaldo may be relied upon too much to score and create crucial goals and chances, and an injury or suspension could upset the style and focus of Man Utd’s play.

Star Player:
Cristiano Ronaldo was understandably courted by Real Madrid for a record transfer fee this summer, and Man Utd fans will be relieved to see that move fall by the wayside.
Ronaldo has it all – skill, trickery, pace and determination – he is surely the best player in the world at the moment and though he will find it hard to beat last season’s goal tally, another sensational season can be expected.

Summary:
Though there are likely to be one or two big signings before the close of the transfer window, Sir Alex Ferguson has not been active in the transfer market as yet. After spending heavily in the last few years building his side, he may be content with Man Utd’s strength in depth and good balance between youth and experience, but new signings may be needed to freshen up the squad.
The Ronaldo-Real Madrid fiasco seems to be a lot of fuss about nothing and it is unlikely to affect his, or Man Utd’s performances on the field too much.
Man Utd could use a signing, but even now, their Champions League-winning squad is truly world-class and another title seems very possible.
