PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
NEWCASTLE UNITED FC
Coach: Kevin Keegan (Eng)
Former England international and manager Kevin Keegan is revered in Newcastle for his miracle-working with the side when he was manager from 1992 to 1997, in which time he gained promotion to the Premier League, finishing 3rd, 6th and 2nd.
His surprising return to Newcastle did not immediately pay-off for chairman Mike Ashley, but towards the end of the season Keegan turned it around, going on a 5 game unbeaten streak

Good:
Newcastle have a lot of talented players, with strikers Martins and Owen among the best of them. New signing Jonas Gutierrez was a key player for Mallorca last season, creating many of the chances that made Dani Guiza the top scorer in the Primera Liga and the winger could be a big success with the Magpies faithful.
Argentina team-mate Colocinni looks likely to sign and the centre-back will help to strengthen Newcastle’s leaky defence.
Bad:
Newcastle have performed way under expectations in the last couple of seasons and the surprising return of Kevin Keegan as manger last season did little to change fortunes, at least immediately.
Defensively, Newcastle were poor last season, conceding 65 goals in the league and twice being humiliated by the eventual champions Man Utd (0-6 and 1-5).

Star Player:
Michael Owen was given the captaincy by Keegan mid-way through last season and his experience and natural goalscoring ability were shown at times towards the end of the season; with his England place not assured, he will be keen to prove himself and could be key to Newcastle’s hope of progress.

Summary:
Though many Newcastle fans hope for the return to winning ways under Keegan, with such defensive problems last year, it will not be easy to turn the club’s fortunes around quickly. Argentine internationals Gutierrez and Coloccini should prove to be good signings, though, but a top ten finish may be the best that Newcastle can achieve.
