PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
PORTSMOUTH FC
Coach: Harry Redknapp (Eng)
Harry Redknapp ended another successful season with Portsmouth, winning the FA cup, his first trophy as a manager. A highly-respected manager, known for his ability to work the transfer market, he has managed West Ham, Southampton and Bournemouth.
Last season’s corruption allegations may have cost him his chance for the England manager’s job, but he responded in style, winning the FA cup against Cardiff.

Good:
The signing of England in Peter Crouch (back for his second spell at Portsmouth) shows Portsmouth’s growing ambition and reputation.
Crouch has stated his thought that Portsmouth can challenge the big four, and while this is slightly too ambitious, Portsmouth and their players are now looking up the table rather than down.
Portmouth only conceded 14 goals at home last year (5th best in the league) and Fratton Park is a hard venue for even the biggest sides in the league to come to; Liverpool, Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea all drew there last season.
Bad:
Portsmouth lost focus in the league towards the end of last season, losing the last 4 matches; their minds may have been on the upcoming FA cup final, but with a season in Europe to come, Portsmouth may not be able to cope with the fixture pile-up and all that comes with it.
The loss of key player Sulley Muntari, who was ever-present in the league last year, to Inter weakens their midfield, and another player of the same ilk may be required, before the end of the transfer window.

Star Player:
Peter Crouch wasn’t particularly successful at Liverpool, but he has established himself in the England set up, and now has 14 goals in 28 internationals.
While he was in and out of the Liverpool side, he will be a first team regular with Portsmouth and that can only benefit him and the club – he should find himself amongst the scoring a lot this season.

Summary:
Portsmouth should again challenge for the European spots, but their league form may suffer if they reach the final stages of any of the cup competitions that they will be in.
Also, with extra games in Europe, Portsmouth’s squad may struggle to stay fully fit and injuries could cause problems for their form – a top half finish looks probable.
