At Sevilla, Juande Ramos won the Uefa Cup two seasons in a row, as well as winning the domestic cup, the Copa del Rey and took Sevilla to 3rd place in La Liga in the 2006/7 season. His first season at Tottenham was relatively successful; he took Spurs out of relegation danger and finished in 11th, and won the League Cup at the expense of Chelsea, qualifying for the Uefa Cup in the process.

Good:
Darren Bent, who had a less than spectacular first season last term, has been showing signs that he may have settled in, with some good performances in pre-season; though it is foolish to read too much in friendlies, the guarantee of games with the loss of Keane may help Bent this season.
Spurs’ signings have been very good; Modric and Bentley are two young attacking midfielders that should help Tottenham improve on their disappointing league performance last season.
Bad:
With Keane moving to Liverpool and Berbatov likely to also be leaving, Spurs will find it hard to replace two key goalscorers.
Though the purchase of defender Woodgate midway through last season helped to stem the flow of goals conceded, there were times towards the end of the season that Spurs’ defence collapsed, with their 1-4 losses at Birmingham and at home to Newcastle as obvious examples.

Star Player:
Luka Modric had a very good Euro 2008 with Croatia as their side’s playmaker and looks to be an exciting prospect. If he can settle in well, he could become a key player for Spurs in creating chances and scoring goals from midfield.
At Dinamo Zagreb, Modric was key to their 3 championship wins in the last 3 years and he won the Croatian player of the year in 2007

Summary:
Spurs have once again spent a lot in their attempt to be a major force in the league, but with the loss of club captain Robbie Keane and probably Berbatov too, they may be lacking up front, unless Darren Bent can capitalise on his good pre-season form and begin to pay back his large transfer fee.
They should fare better than last season’s under-achieving 11th place, but Juande Ramos’ true expertise may lie in knock-out competitions, so any route to European football may have to come through the FA Cup or the successful defence of the League Cup.
