PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
SUNDERLAND AFC
Coach: Roy Keane (Ire)
After a glittering playing career with Man Utd and Nottm Forest, Roy Keane was appointed Sunderland manager at the start of the 2006/7 season, and he took Sunderland to the top off the Championship gaining promotion to the Premier League.
His first season in the premiership was successful in that they survived, and with more funding to spend on players this year, he will be hoping to improve on last season’s performance.

Good:
Time and time again last season, Sunderland would not give in until the final whistle, and the amount of points they picked up in the last 5 minutes of games was the main reason for their survival.
Roy Keane must have instilled real determination and fitness into the Sunderland side and a similar fighting spirit can be expected this season.
Keane’s signings have been good, with a good amount of Premiership experience although it is hard not to see Diouf falling out with Keane at some point!
Bad:
Defensively, Sunderland were very poor at times last season and despite making a few signings, Keane has not bought a centre-back of real quality; Sunderland could be punished for error-prone defensive displays this season, unless Keane is again active in the transfer market.

Star Player:
Last year’s Sunderland player of the season, Kenwyne Jones impressed in his first season at Sunderland following a £6 million move from Southampton. Tall, good in the air, quick and hard-working, Jones’ goals could be crucial for Sunderland’s season.

Summary:
Sunderland lost 21 times last season, and despite finishing 15th, they were only one win off of relegation; Keane will not want to play it so close this season.
Their defence was Sunderland’s main problem last season, with mistakes and poor positional play to blame for many of the 59 league goals they conceded.
In attack, Sunderland look quite useful with new signings Malbranque and Diouf thrown into the mix, but unless there is drastic improvement in defence, another relegation-threatened season looks likely.
