PREMIERSHIP TEAM PREVIEWS
WEST BROMWICH ALBION FC
Coach: Tony Mowbray (Eng)
Former Midlesbrough, Celtic and Ipswich centr-back, Tony Mowbray’s first job in club management was at Hibs in 2004. In two years there, Hibs finished in the top 4 in both seasons and Mowbray won the writers’ manager of the year award in 2005.
Mowbray moved to West Brom in late 2006 and in his first year he took them to the play-offs of the Championship, eventually losing 0-1 to Derby in the final. In his 2nd season, West Brom won the Championship by two points and reached the semi-final of the FA cup.

Good:
West Brom have brought in some useful signings, with fringe England international goalkeeper Scott Carson and highly-rated Dutch young defender Zuiverloon being impressive acquisitions.
Tony Mowbray’s style of play was widely praised last season, as he prefers his side to pass the ball, patiently waiting for openings, with Jonathan Greening being likened to a “quarter-back” in his role of chief distributor.
Bad:
At 35 years of age, striker Kevin Phillips may have been getting on, but he was joint top scorer last season in the Championship with 22 goals; his sale to Birmingham, will leave a void that new signing Luke Moore may not be capable of filling.
Also, Hungarian attacking midfielder Zoltan Gera has gone to Fulham and his creativity and goals will also be missed.

Star Player:
Club captain Jonathan Greening played all 46 league games in the Championship last year and as a deep-lying playmaker, his performances will have a large bearing on West Brom’s chances of survival this season.

Summary:
Of the 3 promoted sides, West Brom have the greatest chance of staying up, not just because they won the Championship, but because of their style of play. They will not find it easy, though; in their last 3 seasons in the Premiership, West Brom have finished 19th, 17th and 19th.
While they might struggle against the league’s better sides, it is easy to see West Brom competing with the sides in the bottom half; it will be a struggle, but Premiership survival is not beyond them.
