LIGUE 1 TEAM PREVIEWS
FC GIRONDINS de BORDEAUX
Coach: Laurent Blanc (Fra)
The former France defender earned 97 caps for his country and played at Barcelona, Marseille, Inter and Man United during his playing career. His managerial career has just started - last year at Bordeaux his first as a coach - but he's showing himself to be a promising coach as well.
His arrival saw Bordeaux, 24 points behind Lyon in 06/07, close the gap on Lyon, missing out on the 07/08 title by just four points, and their surge at the end of the season gave their fans real hope they could displace perennial champions Lyon.

Star Player:
Wendell and David Bellion both weighed in with double figures in the league last year which helped Bordeaux amass 65 league goals, but the star of the show was Argentinian striker Fernando Cavenaghi, who had a storming second-half of the season hitting all his 15 league goals after the New Year.
Still only 24, he must be hoping this season he can replicate that form again and the form he showed at River Plate, where he scored 71 goals in 121 games.

Summary:
Along with Marseille, Bordeaux are expected to offer the biggest challenge to Lyon, who will be aiming for their eighth title in a row. The number of goals they hit last season, and Cavenaghi's return to the form he showed as a teenager, suggest that Bordeaux are not a terrible punt to win the Ligue 1 crown.
Away form does need to improve though and, compared to the quality throughout the Lyon side and Marseille's improvement under Gerets, they will perhaps be consigned to third place.
