The goalscoring Brazilian left-back, Michel Fernandes Bastos, was the club's top scorer last season with eight goals. Coming into his third season at the club, his responsibility and importance to the team is increasing and holding onto Bastos will be crucial if Lille have hopes of European football the following season.

Summary:
After the successful six-year reign of charismatic coach Claude Puel, there is likely to be a change one way or the other in the direction of the club. Reaching the heights of third as they did in 05/06 may become more of a distant memory during the coming season.
They lost only seven games last season (same as Lyon), but their downfall was in the number of drawn games. A top-half finish this season will be more than welcome, but instead expect a couple of transitional seasons and, for 2008/09, 12th or 13th may be the limits of Garcia's new team.
