LIGUE 1 TEAM PREVIEWS
FC LORIENT
Coach: Christian Gourcuff (Fra)
Gourcuff is starting his 19th season - over three spells starting in 1982 - as Lorient manager, so is a familiar face in Brittany. In his third spell, Gourcuff has achieved promotion and decent Ligue 1 finishes, with his success largely built on a solid defence.

Star Player:
Algerian playmaker Rafik Saifi was top scorer with 14 league goals last season, double the next highest-scoring player. With bags of experience in France and 33 years old, he will be looked to for help in the goalscoring department in a side that's quite shot shy.

Summary:
Defensive stability has been key in Gourcuff's management and the last two years have seen Lorient establish themselves as a solid Ligue 1 team. With Ligue 1 as finely balanced as it is, it perhaps made sense for Gourcuff to look to get a competitive advantage in buying midfielders and attackers, but there still does appear to be a lack of quality up front and their reliance of Saifi's goals last year was evident.
However, Lorient have improved year-on-year in the past four seasons and they're unlikely to drop significantly in 2008/09. A mid-table finish 9th to 12th is perhaps the target.
