A former Brazilian international, who captained his country at the 1990 World Cup, Ricardo is now starting his second season at ASM. He was previously at Bordeaux, whom to took to second place in 2005/06, but a challenge for the title proved beyond the team as they slumped the following season. At Monaco, he has also struggled to improve the team's league position and last season's 12th was the club's worst since 2002.

Star Player:
Left-winger Anderson Nene joined Monaco last season after Celta Vigo were relegated in a £5million move. Most seasons he weighs in with around 8 goals and last season's haul of 5 was reasonable given Monaco's fumblings in the lower-half of the table.
Keeping onto Nene may be difficult as he has attracted interest from Premiership clubs; without him, and having lost other attacking players in the summer, Monaco could really struggle.

Summary:
The loss of joint top-scorer (7 league goals) Piquionne to Lyon will be felt. Throw in the departures of Koller (back in January) and the loan of Sambou to Le Havre and three of the club's top five scorers last year are no longer at the club. In their place, sees the return of youngster Nimani, who was on loan at Lorient and Sedan last year and struggled to find the net, and the American teenager Freddy Adu who, however talented, is not a goalscorer.
Another mid-table finish is expected, but unless some attacking re-inforcements are bought before the end of August and in January, they may end up closer to the relegation zone, around 13th or 14th.
