Gillot's two years at Lens saw them finish in fourth and fifth. The season he stepped aside they were subsequently relegated. Gillot's arrival at Sochaux in January 2008 was instrumental in staving off the threat of relegation for Sochaux. He is quickly establishing himself as a top-class coach.

The French-born young Turkish international striker Mevlut Erdinc was the club's top scorer last season with 11 league goals in his first season at the club having been promoted from the youth team. He seemed to work well under Gillot, scoring most of his goals after the coach arrived in January.
