LIGUE 1 TEAM PREVIEWS
AS SAINT-ETIENNE
Coach: Laurent Roussey (Fra)
Laurent Roussey's arrival in 2006/07 as assistant coach to Ivan Hasek helped les Verts adopt a more attacking approach, something that continued in Roussey's first season in 2007/08 as head coach and they finished the season in 5th place.

Star Player:
The striker Bafetimbi Gomis was called up to the French team just before their ill-fated Euro 2008 campaign, but he acquitted himself well on his debut, scoring twice against Ecuador in a pre-tournament friendly and last season he hit 16 league goals to help St Etienne to fifth in Ligue 1.
Having taken a little while to find his feet at the club, the last two seasons have seen his reputation grow and should he continue his progress he seems set to become a regular French international.

Summary:
Last season's fifth-placed finish was no fluke and, under Roussey, they can expect to remain in the top eight for a couple more seasons at least. Defensively, they were strong last year and they have brought in Monsoreau to add extra depth. However, a lot seems to rest on retaining Gomis and the continued good form of Pascal Feinduono.
They look set to battle with Rennes for fourth place this season, but might be edged out for that spot. Even a repeat of last year's top-five finish might be tough, but a top six finish should be expected from Roussey's team.
