LIGUE 1 TEAM PREVIEWS
VALENCIENNES FC
Coach: Antoine Kombouare (Fra)
Kombouare, whose playing career took him to PSG, Sion and Aberdeen, took over at Valenciennes in 2005 and within one year led them to the Ligue 2 title. Now into his fourth season at the club, the last two years have seen the north-east club successfully fight off relegation worries.

Star Player:
The much-travelled defender David Sommeil, now 34, joined last season and his presence steadied the ship at key times last season in their success in avoiding the drop. Another good season will be needed if Valenciennes are to continue their stay in Ligue 1 for another season.

Summary:
The two north-eastern rivals Valenciennes and Lens (who were relegated last season) have swapped a number of players in the summer transfer window. Given many of their arrivals were responsible for Lens dropping from a top five place to relegation, this doesn't appear particularly wise.
Bringing in a number of players is always a gamble, particularly with the team having developed a chemistry the last couple of years in fighting relegation. Making it three years in a row should be too tough for Kombouare's team and they don't look strong enough to avoid the drop this time around, especially with the departure of top-scorer Steve Savidan to Caen in the summer.
